2026-2027 Placement & Fundraising Opportunities

 

WSL Annual Requirements for July 2026 - June 2027:

 

SIGN UP by May 31st: Please sign up for one (1) Service Placement requirement for 2026-2027

 

Active members are required to sign up for one of these placements each year. 

 

NOTE: Jewel Ball & Red Haute are fundraising placements and do not qualify as a Service placement. Service on the Board of Directors counts as a Service placement. Associate, Gold or Silver Members are exempt, but all members are encouraged and welcome to participate!

 

Over the summer, the committee chair will contact you with dates, times and other details for your placement. If you have questions regarding specific committee jobs, contact the committee chair listed in the sign-up document.

Service Placement

Active members are required to fulfill 1 Service Placement each year. Members must be able to work the assigned shifts, so please review the job descriptions and time requirements for the committees listed below.  

Jewel Ball and Red Haute Committee members are still required to sign up for one Service placement.

  • Honorary, Associate, Silver and Gold members are not required to serve on a committee, but are welcome & encouraged to serve.  
  • Members of the Board of Directors or those chairing a committee are not required to sign up for a placement, as the board positions fulfills the requirement.

Active members are required to fulfill 1 Volunteer shift for the Jewel Ball held in September. A signup email is sent in August with various volunteer opportunities available.

Active members are required to fulfill 1 Volunteer shift for the Red Haute Luncheon & Children’s Style Show in February.

New Member Class of 2026-2027

New Members are required to fulfill:

  • Service Placement Shifts
    • 1 Summer/Fall Shift: Either Tuneful Tales or Halloween Concert 
    • 1 Spring Shift: Young People’s Concert (YPC) or ASO Docent
  • 1 Fall Fundraiser Shift (Jewel Ball)
  • 1 Spring Fundraiser Shift (Red Haute)

Tuneful Tales -- SUMMER 2026 PLACEMENT

Commitment: 

Work 2 shifts during Summer 2026 (June and July). Shift duration is 2 hours. 

Locations: Austin Central Library Amphitheater, 701 W. Cesar Chavez Street. Other various branch locations, please check schedule here for specifics. Various days and times are available. 

Validated parking is provided to WSL volunteers. 

Description

WSL volunteers help to welcome families, hand out tickets and set up performance spaces (branch libraries only), distribute and collect post-concert surveys, and lead/manage the instrument petting zoo table (Central Library only).

Facilitate any activity provided by ASO education staff (will vary by location)

Tear down of event and activity spaces (as needed)

Young People's Halloween Concert

Commitment:

Work 2.5-hour shift during the Halloween Concert. 

Location:  Long Center for Performing Arts, 701 West Riverside Drive

The Young People’s Halloween Concert shifts are scheduled for Oct 18, 2026 beginning at 1 pm.  

Description

Every October, ASO presents a Halloween Children’s Concert. This concert is designed for ASO’s youngest patrons. The public performance on Sunday afternoon provides parents a chance to introduce the symphony to their young children in a fun way. 

On the concert day, WSL volunteers may wear Halloween costumes to make volunteering more festive. Volunteers can expect to help register children for the costume contest and run fun game tables on The Long Center’s H-E-B Terrace. Chills and thrills for one and all.

Young People’s Concert Docent

Commitment:

Independent volunteers with no ASO staff in attendance

  • Summer 2026- Docent Information Sessions
  • November/December- Docent Orientation
  • February-Docent Presentation

40-minute presentation at local Austin elementary schools.

Shifts generally between 8:30am – 2:30pm.

Description:  

The Young People’s Concert Docents visit local fourth and fifth grade students in their schools to present an interactive 40-minute presentation ahead of the March Young People’s Concerts. The ASO provided presentation includes information about the concert theme, featured music selections and composers, embedded audio excerpts, and concert day etiquette expectations.

These presentations not only give the children (& their teachers) a preview of the concert, but they also help to build excitement about attendance and enhance the student concert experience. Docent volunteers will be expected to sign up for 2-4 school presentations, some of which may require 2 presentations in one day. Docents are independent volunteers with no ASO staff in attendance.

Young People's Spring Concerts (YPC)

Commitment: 

Work 2 shifts during Spring 2027. Concerts are scheduled to take place Monday - Thursday (3.5 hour shifts) between March 8-11, 2027 from 8:30am - 11:30am or  10am - 1:30pm.

Shifts will be available at both the Long Center for the Performing Arts and at Hays CISD Performing Arts Center. 

Description: 

Spring 2027 YPC volunteers will assist with unloading 4th & 5th grade students from buses, directing them to the Performing Arts Center, and back onto buses. Each concert hosts close to 2000 students for the performance. That's a lot of people moving.

Orchestra Relations Dinners

Commitment: 

Committee members participate in 3 events throughout the season by providing food items and/or volunteering in person (assist with setup/take down, and serve the musicians).  

Rehearsals are generally on Thursday evenings at the Long Center for the Performing Arts on Riverside Drive. ASO dress rehearsal schedule is once a month September 2026 - May 2027.

Description

This is a great way to support the ASO musicians in a direct way by serving dinner to the musicians before their dress rehearsal. Volunteers provide catered, homemade, or store bought food items either to the Long Center or an alternate drop off location on the day of the rehearsal before 6:00pm.  Themes and menus are set by the committee chairs over the summer.

Volunteers are welcome to stay until 8:00pm to enjoy the rehearsal.

Symphony Welcome Committee

Commitment: 

2 shifts per year, working an evening shift at the Long Center on Barton Springs Blvd.  Some shifts may take place outside of the Long Center. 

Description: 

Volunteer at ASO Masterworks concerts at the Long Center to welcome donor patrons & their guests, answer questions, and work the check in table. If seats are available, volunteers may stay to enjoy the concert at no charge. Arrive one and half hours before the concert begins (6:30 p.m.).

Administrative/Property Committee

Commitment: 

Fall 2026: one day for four hours, with the date flexible, at the climate-controlled WSL storage unit on Balcones Drive. Flexible times as well in coordination with Committee Chair.

Description

Organize and maintain the WSL mini-storage unit holdings. This would be a great opportunity for someone who loves to organize.

Meetings

Commitment:

August 2026-May 2027

Work at least 2 General Meetings. There are 6-7 General Meetings during the year.  Must be available for at least 1 lunchtime meeting throughout the year

LOCATION:  Meeting locations to be determined

Description

Work at least 2 General Meetings assisting with set-up, welcoming members and manning sign-in table, general hosting, and clean-up.  One volunteer will send out and manage the online invitations for each meeting.

Member Relations

Commitment:

Dues payment calls Spring 2027; other service opportunities as needed during the year. 

Description: 

Call members to remind them to pay dues before membership cutoff. Assist with other membership committee needs as requested.

New Member Recruitment & Welcome

Commitment: January - May 2027

Description: 

Recruit new members into the 2027-2028 class. Duties include planning a recruitment event, updating sponsor forms, entering info into a database, creating a welcome email, coordinating with the website chair and committee chair, and delivering door hangers in Spring 2027 to new members

Newsletter

Commitment: 

July 2026 - June 2027, Flexible Times 

Description

Help keep the communication flowing in the WSL by working with the Take Note Newsletter Chair to publish a quarterly newsletter about events and our members to the general membership. Writer’s interview other members, gather photographs, and contribute 1-2 short articles per issue for the chair to compile and publish. Self-scheduled with deadlines

Great way to meet members! Take photos at WSL events and upload them to online data storage. (Camera owners preferable but phones can work for the asisgnment, too).

Placement

Commitment: 

July 2026- June 2027, Flexible Times 

Description: 

Assist the placement chair in tracking and maintaining attendance and placement records for WSL members, as well as communicate with members about requirements. Work on a personal computer. MS Excel skills beneficial. The placement assistant will monitor Fall and Spring volunteer sign ups and keep track of member participation in the events

Subscriber and Donor Acknowledgement

Commitment: 

October 2026 after Jewel Ball, February 2027 after Red Haute, and other dates as needed for ASO.

Description: 

Write thank you notes for Jewel Ball & Red Haute supporters, and others as requested. Committee members may also be asked to write notes to ASO subscribers and donors.

Symphony Done-In-A-Day

Commitment: 

Work 2-3 shifts throughout the year. Flexible schedule. 

Description: 

WSL member will help the ASO with small tasks as they arise, such as: 

  • Helping out around the ASO office
  • Envelope stuffing/invitation addressing
  • Handout flyers at Hartmann summer concerts
  • Help at Notable Dinner Event in the fall
  • Set up/Decorate for Halloween Concert
  • Working various shifts at the annual ASO season launch party in the spring

Technology Committee

Commitment: 

July 2026- June 2027, Flexible Times

Description:

Assist the VP of Technology and VP Technology-elect in event management in Better Unite, membership data transfer between software platforms, event registration for fundraising events. team will be assigned to work registration at either the Jewel Ball or Red Haute. The committee will be assigned to work registration at either the Jewel Ball or Red Haute.  Previous technology experience is not necessary! This committee is for anyone who is interested in how events are managed, is a problem solver, and curious to learn a user-friendly software program

Member Enrichment

Commitment:

August 2026-June 2027, Work at least 1 member enrichment event

Description:

Tasks may include setup, decorations, cleanup, welcoming members, assisting chairs with logistics, attending events, and outreach to members for participation in events. This is a great way to meet members and encourage engagement in WSL activities.
