Level 1 Description:

Level 1 is your gateway to the world of Commedia dell’Arte, a centuries-old theatrical tradition that combines physical comedy, archetypal characters, and improvisation. In this class, students will dive deep into the iconic stock characters, learning to embody their distinct physicality and personality traits. Through structured games, exercises, and scene work, participants will explore how Commedia’s structured forms create freedom for creativity and spontaneity. This dynamic art form has influenced modern comedy, from slapstick to sitcoms, and provides invaluable tools for storytelling and character creation. No prior experience is required—just bring your curiosity and a willingness to play!

Ayla is a passionate theatre artist and educator with a focus on physical theatre and storytelling. She trained at Dell’Arte International and has performed Commedia dell’Arte at the Carolina Renaissance Festival, bringing her work to life in non-traditional, interactive spaces. Ayla has been teaching and devising theatre for the past six years, fostering a playful, supportive environment where performers can take risks and develop confidence. She is thrilled to share her passion for Commedia and its timeless traditions through this workshop and class series!
