I’ve lived in Houston for over 30 years, and I still get overwhelmed by how much is going on here.
The people, the neighborhood organizations, the public agencies, the elected officials, the city services—we live in an amazing city. Houston isn’t short on good people or great ideas. It’s short on time.
Between work, kids, and family, nobody has two free hours on a Tuesday night to hunt through 25 browser tabs just to find after-school care for their kids, a neighborhood clinic, an environmental organization to volunteer with, or how a new city policy affects their block and their budget.
Turns out, almost all of us feel that way. In More in Common’s 2025 Houston study, 88% of Houstonians said they want to connect and work toward shared goals across lines of difference. What stops us isn’t apathy—it’s simply finding the front door. And Rice University’s Kinder Institute found that neighborhood connection and belonging matter directly for our families’ health, safety, and economic well-being.
How Houston’s Home Base Came to Life
Over more than 18 months, David poured thousands of hours of blood, sweat, tears, and trial and error into building The Community Exchange—driven by an obsession with bringing a true home base to life for neighbors and all Houstonians to get involved in their community. Coming at it as an artist and a community builder rather than a traditional software engineer, he learned by breaking things, hitting dead ends, and starting over whenever a design felt too complicated or institutional. That persistence produced a single, welcoming place that maps the connected layers of government, community, civic life, social and communal spaces, culture, the arts, economics, the environment, family, and neighborhoods—and makes all of it easy to understand across English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
Instead of starting from scratch every time you need something or want to help, The Community Exchange brings Houston together in one place:

- 21 layers of government—from your Super Neighborhood and school board to City Hall, Harris County, and Congress
- 10,000+ ways to plug in across 8 everyday topic doors: Neighborhood, Health, Family, Democracy, Money, Environment, Community, and Arts & Culture
- 3 languages (English, Spanish, and Vietnamese) with zero login walls
It’s already live and working.
Round One raised $75,000 and built a working Houston platform. Over 8,100 Houstonians used it in a single 30-day window, and today it connects 10,000+ verified listings and opportunities across four live tools (the City Guide, 88-Neighborhood Atlas, Legislative Compass, and Resource Radar).

Round Two: $150,000 to take the Community Exchange deeper into Houston.
- $60K for The Guide — Keeping 10,000+ ways to plug in accurate, verified, and up to date in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
- $50K for The People — The local Houston team that builds it, checks the details, and keeps it running.
- $40K for The Work — Neighborhood partnerships, outreach, and gatherings that bring people into the room.
