For years, Impact Hub Houston has been on the front lines, helping people turn their passions into progress. From the Adidas Social Impact Accelerator to our Founders Bootcamps and our work coordinating TEDxHouston, The Houston Innovation Summit (THIS), BEAMW, and the Greater Houston Support Stack, we have seen firsthand what works—and what breaks—in the journey of changemakers and entrepreneurs from all walks of life.
Our work has always been about more than just programs; it's about solving the systemic challenges: the siloed efforts of support organizations, the scattered data that hides true need, and the inadequate leverage of local talent and capital.
Drawing on our experience, we’re taking the ultimate step: Over the next six months we will ...
1. Launch our own "Ideas to Impact" Accelerator program, leveraging our partnership with LeanStack
2. Launch a new "Build Equity Entrepreneurship" program, in partnership with the University of Notre Dame
3. Launch a new platform to provide our ecosystem with the infrastructure to connect, standardize, and scale all the good work being done across the city. This platform will be the digital engine that connects every small business to the precise resource they need, based on real-time data—not guesswork. It is designed to ensure that ALL of our region's communities can participate in and contribute to a thriving economy. Because "y'all" means "all"!
We're pouring our expertise and resources into building this platform. And, unfortunately, those resources took a major hit earlier this year when the government decided to abruptly terminate our 4-year Capital Readiness Program grant in just its second year. Our largest grant, yet, this $1.5 million cut impacted funding not just to us, but to our program partners and subawardees, including HMSDC, the Houston Area Urban League, Houston Business Development, Inc., and United4Change Center. But as we do when a crisis strikes: We rise above it. We keep building. We keep doing the good work, because our community depends on us.
We believe the platform we're building will be a game-changer that can scale out to serve communities and ecosystems across the region and around the country. But this cutting-edge infrastructure requires dedicated resources to run, maintain, and activate the community. This is why we seek your support.
The total cost to deploy, maintain, and staff this essential system in its critical first two years is $490,000. While we have secured meaningful seed funding from JPMorganChase Foundation based on our proven track record, this federal grant cut presents a potentially fatal gap for the project. We need to fund staff and materials to onboard a critical mass of at least 24 Entrepreneur Support Organizations (ESOs) across our region and ensure hundreds of entrepreneurs get the support they need to thrive, create jobs, and reinvest in local communities.
