Founders' Scholarship Challenge for Higher Education

Golf is more than a game at First Tee Utah. We teach golf and we’re very serious about doing it well. Our coach teams include PGA golf professionals because the kids deserve it, the parents demand it and we want it. But there’s more at the First Tee. Golf has the unique ability to require a player to become a better person. Golf demands honesty, integrity, responsibility and perseverance, among other qualities that will lead to success both on and off the course. In fact, these are among the character values and life skills that are the foundation of what we teach at First Tee.

Did you know First Tee Utah never turns away a kid for a lack of ability to pay? We call this scholarshiping. About 1 in 4 of our kids receives some scholarship assistance. We provide scholarships for any kids who needs one so that every Utah kid can participate in our life-changing programs. Another service we provide at no cost is our Club Library. We provide clubs to any kid who needs them. We also take care of the kids who need to exchange clubs they've outgrown for a set that is the right size for them so that they continue growing and have the best experience.

The newest way First Tee is supporting the growth and lifelong progress of Utah kids is our addition of a higher education scholarship. 

We realized long ago that our greatest impact in the life of Utah kids is achieved at our advanced First Tee levels including the Birdie, Eagle, and Ace levels. To inspire and encourage kids to stay in our programs and keep moving up to the advanced levels, First Tee Utah will now offer scholarships specifically for higher education. The National First Tee organization already provided scholarship opportunities at a national level, but our goal is to bring these opportunities local with scholarships specifically for our Utah kids. Funds raised for this scholarship fund will allow us to continue supporting these wonderful kids on their journey towards becoming better people and positive, contributing members of their communities. 

First Tee Utah's Founders' Scholarships for boys will be named the "Tim and Jerry Howells Scholarship" and the scholarships for girls will be named the "Doug and Denise Vilven Scholarship" in honor of their impact on Utah golf and their lifelong embodiment of the First Tee values. 

Our sustaining supporters love the addtion of higher education scholarships for First Tee Utah kids. They understand that this will help us to have a bigger impact on the kids in our programs, thus they are showing their support financially in the form of a donation matching fund. Because of substantial donations from two of First Tee Utah's founders and several other sustaining supporters, we have $47,000 available this year in donation matching funds.
