Join Beavers Northwest, the Woodland Park Zoo's Bat Activity Trends (BAT) Program, and Bats Northwest for an interactive beaver and bat-themed nature walk.

Participants will meet at the Carkeek Park Beach parking lot, next to the bulletin board at the start of Piper's Creek Trail, on Tuesday, August 12th at 7:00pm. Beavers Northwest staff will lead attendees on a walk to explore beaver activity at Carkeek Park and provide context on the beaver presence in this area. This is a great opportunity to see the impacts that beavers have on ecosystems, observe the plants and wildlife that thrive in beaver-modified systems, and discuss beaver coexistence in our human-modified ecosystems.

Woodland Park Zoo and Bats Northwest will then lead us on a BAT night after the beaver stroll! The BAT Program empowers community members to help with local bat conservation and coexistence by going out for 30 minutes after sundown and documenting bat activity. This data is then added to a growing, community science informed map of where bats are in the city and how active.

The event will last approximately 2 hours and participants will travel a distance of approximately 0.5 miles on flat gravel trails and boardwalks. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and to dress for the weather. For best viewing of wildlife, we recommend bringing binoculars. We will have a few pairs available to borrow.

About the Woodland Park Zoo's BAT Program:

Bats are a common wildlife species across Washington state, including urban areas, but their nocturnal habits mean that people often don’t notice them. Join us to learn about Washington’s amazing bats, learn how to observe these nighttime neighbors through our Bat Activity Trends program, and submit your observations to our ever growing, community-built map of bat activity around our region. https://www.zoo.org/batactivity
