About the Speaker:
Jocelyn Chamra-Barrera is a bilingual Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). She holds a Master of Science in Social Work from the School of Social Work and a Bachelor of Arts from The University of Texas at Austin. She has been a practicing social worker in Austin since 2014. Jocelyn has focused her work in the areas of mental health, child abuse and neglect, intimate partner violence, and significant trauma. Jocelyn is trained in EMDR and is currently working on her play therapy licensure. She has previous experience working with children, adolescents, and families, having served as a social worker at a Family Resource Center and the Travis County Child Advocacy Center and as a therapist at the Austin Center for Grief & Loss. Jocelyn is the Executive and Clinical Director of the Christi Center, a grief support center in Austin, Texas.
Description:
The presentation will explore the impact of grief on people of Latino and Hispanic culture. The talk will discuss cultural considerations that may impact work with the Latino and Hispanic communities. We will discuss activities and interventions that will help in grief work.
Objectives:
- Describe different ways grief and loss are unique in the culture of Latino and Hispanic communities.
- Learn and discuss cultural values that may impact the grief journey.
- Identify concepts to consider when offering culturally appropriate services to Latino and Hispanic communities.
