PROJECT INFORMATION

Homeowner Biography

Mary Wilson, 77, was born in Louisiana. Shortly after graduating from high school, she began her journey around the United States. This journey took her to several states, including Illinois, Kentucky, Alaska, Mississippi, and Texas. She finally settled in Georgia in 1986 and has lived in Cobb County ever since.

Mary vividly remembers moving to Smyrna and purchasing her home on November 7, 1997. It was a dream come true. Mary met her husband, John, right after high school. He served our country for over 30 years as an Officer in the Army. On a date, they were watching "The Dating Game," in which a couple won a trip to Alaska. At that time, Mary mentioned to John that "I would like to go to Alaska." Shortly thereafter, John asked to be stationed in Alaska. His service allowed Mary to travel around the country. Sadly, John passed away several years ago.

Mary worked for CIBA Vision both in manufacturing and distribution for nearly 20 years. She retired in 2009. She still stays in touch with her coworkers. "They were great friends and like family," says Mary. Mary is fiercely independent and does not like to rely on others for help. For years, she was able to manage the repairs and maintenance needed for her home. As she has aged, these have been more and more difficult. Mary lives on an extremely limited income of social security and retirement. By the end of the month, this only covers her basic living expenses. As with many seniors, Mary cannot afford to make home repairs.

Family and faith are important to Mary. She has a daughter, five grandchildren, and a great grandchild. All of her family members live in the Greater Smyrna area and visit often. Mary attends church every Sunday at a local Baptist church. "Everyone knows me," says Mary. Mary struggles with mobility due to a slipped disc in her back and neck.

Her home needs a new roof, a new water heater, plumbing repair, a new ADA-compliant bath/shower, and the entire exterior of her home needs a new coat of paint. The trees in her yard are very mature and some are overgrown, and her yard needs landscaping to improve its appearance. In fact, one tree in her yard is so large and close to the roof that the tree must be removed before the roof can be replaced on her home. The interior of Mary’s home needs painting as well.

Mary wants to stay in her home and the Smyrna community she loves. Without your support, Mary would not be able to age in place in a safe and healthy home. Mary says, "I am overjoyed by the generosity of these amazing companies and complete strangers helping me stay in my home. I am so blessed. There is no way I could stay in my home without their help. THANK YOU!”
