Instructor: Sandy Shelenberger

Saturday November 1st |  10a-4pm

Explore using soy wax as a resist on fabric to create a sophisticated look of multi-dimensional layering in easy to do steps. We will work with fabric dyes for our color palette and discuss the layering of colors. We will dye paint layers, before using a wax resist. We will make or use found objects or traditional copper tjaps for stamping into the fabric using the soy wax. Then we will overdye after waxing. Demonstrations of wax removal techniques.  Participants will leave with their own uniquely dyed and patterned cloth.

Instructor Bio: Sandy’s love of sewing and designing her own creations came together during a quilting class she took in 1984, where she began to see quilting as an art form and as a means of self-expression. She hand-dyes most of her fabric and uses surface-design techniques such as Shibori, batik or experimental screenprinting to create her distinctive marks and patterns. In addition to quilting, Sandy works in the media of encaustic and cold wax. Sandy’s work has been in several publications and juried art exhibitions. Her art quilt Shifting Sands, Sapphire Skies was recently accepted into the prestigious Quilt National ’21. Her art has been featured in 2 solo exhibitions as well as invitational and juried group events at FACES of Fiber, Estes Park, CO (2022), Visions Art Museum (San Diego, CA, 2018), Woman Made Gallery (Chicago, IL), Ohio Craft Museum (Columbus, OH) and an international juried exhibition at Schweinfurth Arts Center (Auburn, NY). She received the Award for Excellence at the “Best of Ohio” in 2014, and a Juror’s Award of Merit in Quilt National 2005 in Athens, OH. She also had work exhibited in the prestigious Fiberarts International in Pittsburgh, PA in 2013.  Sandy is married to husband, Jeff, has two grown sons and two adopted dogs. She worked as a Registered Nurse for 33 years and left nursing in 2014 to pursue her passion in art. She currently teaches dyeing, Shibori and fabric surface design techniques at her studio (Conneaut, OH), at Praxis Fiber Workshop (Cleveland, OH), and travels to teach and lecture. She has hosted retreats that explore using encaustic and multimedia techniques. She is a member of Textile Art Alliance, Cleveland Museum of Art, Surface Design Association, Art Quilt Network, Erie Art Museum and the Northwestern Pennsylvania Artist Association. She enjoys sharing her knowledge and passion of the creative process.
