Coiling Baskets and Sculptures | Saturday August 1st & Saturday August 8th | 10am-4pm

Coiling has a rich history among indigenous basket makers and is now embraced by
contemporary artists. Today, this technique is used to craft a wide range of creations, from
traditional baskets to modern sculptures.
Course Overview: Students will explore the fundamentals of coiled structures, culminating in
the creation of a small basket or sculpture.
Day 1 focuses on preparing and selecting materials, then getting started with the coiling process. Participants learn the basic stitches used in coiling and practice techniques for shaping their pieces. On Day 2, the focus shifts to refining the shape of the work while exploring decorative stitches. The session also covers mastering splicing and learning how to properly finish the core and wrapping techniques.
Instructor Bio: Char Norman is an accomplished fiber artist specializing in papermaking and fiber sculpture. Her work addresses environmental issues and the enduring need for all things to exist in a symbiotic relationship. Her work incorporates many techniques to create three-dimensional pieces. She received a Master of Fine Art from Claremont Graduate University and a Bachelor of Art from Scripps College. She has lectured and exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally. She held the positions of Associate Provost and Dean of Faculty at Columbus College of Art & Design and has now returned to the studio as a full-time professional artist.
