The demographic information is optional, so you do not have to complete them if you do not wish. They will not be used to determine your ability to volunteer with our organization. If you prefer not to answer, you can make the selection 'Prefer not to say'.
Volunteer Opportunities
This next section outlines the different volunteer opportunities that Nerdy Girl Success currently has available. You may select as many opportunities as you would like. Many of our programs/events have multiple roles. A brief description of each role is included along with approximate time requirement and if it is in person or virtual.
Career and Leadership Summit for High School Girls - In Person
This is a half day event typically done on a Saturday from 9am - 12:30pm. The location is usually at a high school but occasionally takes place at a corporate office. The set up is similar to a career fair where the girls stop by tables to speak with women about their careers. The girls also participate in a breakout session and we end the day with a panel discussion. The different roles are listed and described below. This event is currently conducted in person.
• Career Representative: This role is very similar to having a booth at a career fair. The difference here is that you are there to represent your career and career journey, not your company. There is no formal presentation involved with this role. Time commitment - 3 hrs.
• Breakout Session Presenter: Sessions are 45 minutes long. You would present your session twice. Each group size is 10 - 15 girls. Time commitment - 3 hrs.
• Panelist: You would be one of three panelists sharing your experiences, advice, and answering questions from the girls. The topic and list of questions will vary depending on the event's theme. Questions will be emailed out well in advance.Time commitment - 1.5 hours
• Moderator: lead the panel discussion. Time commitment - 1.5 hours
• General Volunteer: assist with checking in students and volunteers. Time commitment - 3hrs.

High School Club Volunteers - In Person
A cornerstone of our programming, NGS’ High School Clubs foster a community of learning and support among girls, setting them up for success in school, career and life. Through monthly sessions (8 per school year), participants learn how to use their voice and understand their worth. Sessions consist of both insightful, educational workshops and opportunities to meet and speak with women about their careers. The volunteer roles are listed below. This program is currently conducted in person.
Note that all volunteer roles are required to complete each district’s volunteer registration application, including a background check, prior to volunteering.
Club Volunteer Roles
• Campus Coordinator: Support and guide high school campus sponsors. You will act as point of contact and NGS representative for the campus sponsor, or the district employee who facilitates each club. Volunteers are expected to attend each monthly club meeting to help with each session’s programming, as well as support any logistics for participants and workshop presenters. Time commitment: ~1 hour per club, per month & ~1-2 hours per month for any coordination and communication

Career Accelerator Program - Virtual
NGS’ virtual career accelerator program intended for young women, ages 18-22.
This virtual program aims to prepare young women for internships and future careers in various professions. Young women will leave with a completed resume, established LinkedIn profile, and various connections with women in professions and at companies of interest. Participants will gain access to employment and/or internship opportunities, a better understanding of careers that they are interested in, and interviewing and resume building practice. The volunteer roles are listed below.
Career Accelerator Volunteer Roles
• Career Speaker: Come represent your career and profession! Speakers are asked to facilitate a casual conversation via Zoom with a participant about their current career and professional journey. This does not need to happen on the day of the event - participants and volunteers will agree on a date and time around the event that works best for them. Time Commitment: ~1 hour
• Resume Reviewer: Help students build their resume! Ahead of the program, participants will share an original version of their resume and then be paired with a volunteer to review, revise, and discuss via Zoom. This does not need to happen on the day of the event - participants and volunteers will agree on a date and time around the event that works best for them. The revised resume is then submitted to compete for the $500 prize for stand-out participants. Time Commitment: ~1 hour
• Mock Interviewer: Help students practice interviewing! Closing out each Career Accelerator program, students will participate in mock interviews and be scored on their performance by their interviewer using the provided rubric. Time Commitment: ~1 hour
• Scorer: Identify stand-out participants! As part of the program, there is an opportunity to be awarded a $500 prize based on 2 application items they are asked to complete and submit: Resume and an Essay. Volunteers are asked to score each item for 2-3 students using a rubric provided by NGS to determine a program stand-out and prize winner. Time Commitment: ~1 hour
• Session Presenter: Help students prepare for the career world! Sessions are approximately 60 minutes long, via Zoom. You will be able to indicate which sessions you would be comfortable presenting. Lesson materials will be provided.

The next two sections cover our job shadow and flash mentoring opportunities.
In the instances where volunteers will be working with students on their own, whether in person or virtually, a background check is required. We have a great level of trust with parents. In order to participate in the flash mentor and job shadow, we ask that our volunteers have a background check completed to help maintain that level of trust with our parents.
We also ask our volunteers to make a tax deductible donation to assist with the cost of the background checks. The average cost is $36.
Job Shadow - Virtual and In Person (Background Check Required)
This is an opportunity for young women in high school to see, first hand, the day-to-day routine of a career they are interested in pursuing.
Volunteers will be matched with a student to experience any/all aspects of a given profession, and are encouraged to include them in whatever daily routines would be most educational, interesting, and insightful.
Ahead of the job shadow, NGS will moderate a meeting between the volunteer, student and their guardian(s) to review expectations, address questions and concerns, and ensure the experience is optimal for all involved. Students are eligible for a job shadow if they are members of one of our High School Cubs and/or our Career Accelerator program.
NGS covers all necessary insurance for the student’s visit. The experience should last ~4 hours on one day on a date that is mutually agreed upon by the student and the volunteer.
Flash Mentor - Virtual (Background Check Required)
Even the smallest conversation can have a lifelong impact. Are you interested in speaking one-one-one with young women in high school or college about your career? Do you have an area of expertise that would be helpful to someone starting in their career or college? Be a part of our Flash Mentoring Roster!
This is to be a casual conversation and more like a 'one-off' discussion rather than an official on-going mentor-mentee program. Flash Mentoring is our informal, virtual mentoring program that provides ongoing, ad hoc opportunities for young women in high school and college to access professional women in careers that interest them.
Students can visit the Mentor Roster on our website and sign up to chat with a mentor of their choice. Sessions are a one-time meeting and are meant to be open in terms of topic and discussion, allowing students to ask mentors about their career and college experience, seek advice and assistance with job searching and resumes, and ask about professional challenges and opportunities.
Flash mentors are required to go through a background check, and all students 18 and under must have parent permission to participate.
If you are interested in being a flash mentor, please answer the following questions. If you are not interested in being a flash mentor, you can skip to the next section.

Nerdy Girl Success Committees
Nerdy Girl Success has a Board of Directors to help advise the organization on impact, strategy, finance, brand, and programming. However, to be successful Nerdy Girl Success relies on many more people to help drive this change through their time commitment, brand ambassador activities and sharing their expertise. Our various committees play an important role in both helping drive awareness for Nerdy Girl Success as well as helping give feedback to continually improve the organization and to better serve the young women in our programs.
Benefits of joining a committee:
Outside of having a positive impact on your community and the young women we serve, committee membership is considered when openings arise on our Board of Directors.
Commitments of Committee Members:
• Be a good Brand Ambassador for Nerdy Girl Success out in your community. Share our social media posts. Let others know of our events and programs.
• Your attendance at the committee meetings is highly valued and is necessary for the committee to function properly. Missing 3 committee meetings may result in a members removal from the committee.
• Participating in the activities that your committee is involved in. For example: If you are a part of the fundraising committee that has planned an event, to the best of your ability, plan on being present to help the event have a successful outcome. (Exclusions: if the event is taking place outside of your geographic location)
