The Devastation
Hurricane Melissa made landfall on October 28 with sustained wind speeds reaching 185 mph, and wind gusts reaching over 200 mph, leaving much of the island without power, displacing thousands, and devastating infrastructure across western and southern Jamaica. It has now been estimated that Hurricane Melissa caused an estimated $8.8 billion in physical damage (close to half of the entire country's economic output in a year). The full financial impact is expected to be closer to $52 billion in losses.

Our Response
The Hurricane Melissa Relief Fund was established to support local landmark community organizations, many of which reached out to ask for assistance in supporting their family and friends with relief. Videos and updates have been posted online as telecomms have become more available. Many friends of Jamaica have sent personal donations to assist in providing food and supplies. The initial focus was on assisting as many people as quickly as possible with basic food, water and essentials.

The Ongoing Crisis
However, the need in Jamaica is greater than simply providing basic necessities. Assessments report that more than 100,000 homes and structures have been lost. Schools, hospitals and homes in the direct path of Hurricane Melissa have been completely decimated; and others have been severely damaged, making them unusable. Furthermore, businesses have also been severely damaged rendering thousands of people jobless in a time when they need employment most.

The communities of Negril, West End, Blue Fields, and Sav-La-Mar are facing impossible choices as families struggle to balance work and family needs during this crisis. Many residents work in hotels, restaurants, and tourism-related businesses that are now closed or operating with reduced capacity. Parents are being forced to choose between going to work to earn desperately needed income and staying home to care for children whose schools are damaged, or to repair their own destroyed homes.

Expanding Our Mission
Over the past month, organizations has ventured into some of the hardest hit communities that needed assistance. They have connected with clinics to hear of community health needs. They have served hundreds of meals and provided as many essentials as possible to people. All the while, seeing the needs are increasing as the full scope of Melissa's damage is learned.

We have heard the call to continue to support Western Jamaica and increase their reach, impact, and resources. It is our hope to "adopt" an entire community that has suffered extreme loss. Beyond providing food to people, homes need to be rebuilt, schools need to be rebuilt, teaching supplies replaced, and hope and dignity restored.

Our Goal
We're hoping to raise $100,000 to provide immediate relief and continue the long road to recovery. No amount is too small—every contribution makes a real difference in someone's life.
