Ready to Respond: Emergency Skills for Food and Beverage Workers
Presented by Good Work Austin in partnership with SHIFT UT and The Sobering Center, hosted at Lau Lau

This training is meant to equip you with practical skills to respond to some of the most common emergencies food and beverage workers encounter. Whether it's recognizing an opioid overdose, knowing when to call the Sobering Center instead of law enforcement, or learning hands-only CPR, you'll leave with tools that can help save lives.

Together, we’ll:

  • Understand the current landscape of opioid use and its impact on our communities

  • Learn how to recognize an opioid overdose, administer naloxone (Narcan)

  • Learn how to make your workplace a Sobering Center referral partner

  • Learn "Take 5 CPR" a hands-only CPR training led by volunteer EMS

About our partners

SHIFT is an initiative at the University of Texas at Austin that is shifting the campus culture of substance misuse toward one of well-being by challenging existing substance use norms and promoting mindful decision-making. We partner with the UT Austin community to implement environmental strategies grounded in public health and strengths-based frameworks through faculty and peer mentor training, student-led zero-proof bartending, harm reduction education, strategic partnerships, and rewards for innovative, evidence-based ideas that address substance misuse and well-being in higher education.

The Sobering Center provides a safe place for publicly intoxicated people to sober up outside of jails and hospitals, and where appropriate provide a bridge to recovery. The Sobering Center opened in 2018 and has served over 14,000 people since then. The center is known for providing quality and compassionate care and being an innovative community partner.
