Our First Five Years Have Been Fruitful

In just five years, Fruitful Commons has supported community-led groups and neighbors who are transforming land and lives across the Austin region.

Here’s what we’ve grown together since 2020:

• $246,000 in Tree Care Mini Grants awarded to 29 community gardens, food forests, school gardens, and other grassroots groups thanks to our partnership with the City of Austin’s Urban Forest Grant

• 4 projects fiscally sponsored and their communities are thriving: 

  • Festival Beach Food Forest expanded from ⅔ acre to over 3 acres

  • Friends of Grand Meadow is helping their neighborhood realize their 25 year dream of building a new park and are preparing to install their new community food forest in 2026

  • Central Texas Seed Savers expanded seed libraries to over a dozen public libraries

  • And Cuernavaca Community Garden built their new garden and have cultivated a thriving green space for the community!

• Gathering of Growers

  • 8 workshops and networking events connecting local leaders, growers, and organizations

• Tree Care Through the Seasons video series, created in partnership with the Austin Urban Forest Grant, Festival Beach Food Forest, and TreeFolks

• Policy advocacy that helps community agriculture take root, including:

  • Collaborating with the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department on a landmark Land Agreement with Festival Beach Food Forest.

  • Joining the PARKnership program with the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department to strengthen community-led stewardship.

  • Supporting the Austin Food Plan through food production initiatives.

  • Developing and advancing the Harvest Hub concept — a replicable model for outdoor teaching kitchens in community agricultural spaces. The first, Cocina Cosecha, will be built at Festival Beach Food Forest in collaboration with the City’s Office of Climate Action and Resilience.

As we look ahead, Fruitful Commons is expanding our services to empower more grassroots leaders, neighborhoods, and organizations that grow food, strengthen communities, and steward the natural commons.

We’re planting seeds for:

• Expanded Mini Grant funding for community-driven projects

• Green workforce pathways in urban agriculture

• Resource and networking hubs for community leaders

Together, we can grow a more resilient Austin.
