Join us for a lively presentation by Joey Santore followed by a seed swap at Desert Door. He'll show photos, do a Q and A, discuss seed collecting, stratification methods, seed dormancy in Texas plants (particularly in dry environments). A well-known botanist from "Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't" on YouTube and the TV show "Kill Your Lawn", Joey leverages his big personality to educate viewers on the value of plants.
From Joey's website: "Plants - when viewed through the 'bigger picture' of ecology and evolution rather than what they can “do” for us (as if holding up the biosphere isn’t enough) - can provide us not only with an awareness and context for our part in the intricate web of life here on Planet Earth, but also with a philosophical underpinning that will enable us to weather and withstand some of the dark elements coming our way." Joey's aim is to give people a context in which to place the living, non-human world that they see around them. Things that were formerly bland become these organisms with their own evolutionary lineages, life histories, and roles in an ecosystem.
Central Texas Seed Savers is perfectly aligned with that statement. Central Texas Seed Savers is a growing network of people who love seeds. We are preventing extinction of plants that are important to Central Texans through community seed saving and seed sharing. We are thrilled to host Joey, and hope you will join us!
