Eight years of meaningful impact together:
- Healing Retreats: Families, accompanied by trauma-trained therapists, travel to Costa Rica for a unique immersive experience to find peace and support after losing a loved one to homicide.
- Empowering Youth: We’ve implemented year-long financial literacy and entrepreneurship programs for over 2,000 underresourced high school students in Austin ISD over the past 3 years.
- Global Horizons: We provide international educational experiences for high school students, valued at $3,000 each.
- Educational Encouragement: We provide scholarships in the amount of $1,500 for graduating high school seniors.
- Opportunities: We offer high school students summer internships that pay a true living wage.
- Advocacy: We provide professional therapy and peer support for crime victims while advocating for victims' rights and mental health equity.

Our Why:
On July 7, 2017, our lives changed forever. We lost our beloved Bakari at just 22 years old. He was a recent University of Arizona graduate. He was murdered in Greece on 7-7-17 while pursuing his dream of launching Bakari Luxury Sportswear, his clothing line, which he conceptualized as a young teenager. The tragedy of his passing was felt worldwide, and in the spirit of healing and transformation, The Bakari Foundation was born.
We made a promise to turn Bakari’s love for engaging with diverse cultures, lifelong learning, and entrepreneurship into a lifeline for others. Our mission is to provide gifts of healing and cultural awareness to families who have suffered the unimaginable loss of a loved one to violence, while also building youth initiatives to stop that violence at its roots by providing custom financial literacy and entrepreneurship programs, and paid summer internships. In addition, we offer scholarships for high school students to travel abroad and to apply toward college expenses.
