On October 28th, Lakeway, Texas becomes a window into Roatán: a place where a love of learning is changing what's possible for an entire generation. This isn't a gala. It's an invitation to see what literacy and education look like on the ground — through the voices of the students and teachers living it, the stories behind the statistics, and a conversation about what it takes to help a child go from their first storybook to a diploma.
Over the course of the evening, you'll:
- Step inside our community library and classrooms — through video and an immersive virtual-reality experience that puts you on the ground in Roatán, where literacy programs and a thriving community library are reshaping what's possible for local kids
- Listen as Deborah Foster describes her July 2026 visit to the library and computer lab, and what she sees as the most tangible ways the Greater Austin community can help expand access to books, bilingual literacy, and learning spaces
- Hear directly from ALF Co-Founders, David and Brenda Dachner about why education became a cornerstone of their work nearly twenty years ago, and where they see it going next
- Enjoy wine and appetizers — because good stories deserve good tastes
- Learn about ways to get personally involved — from funding a classroom or scholarship to visiting Roatán yourself to see the library and literacy programs and volunteer with the kids
This is a chance to understand, firsthand, how 300+ kids in literacy training and 10,000+ annual visitors to our community library add up to something bigger: a generation of Roatán students with the tools to build their own futures.
We hope you'll join us — not just to hear about the work, but to be part of the conversation about how literacy and education can go further.
The evening will highlight students and teachers whose lives your support touches. Here's an example of one of those stories:
