An Irreverent Behind-the-Scenes Look at One of History's Best Kept Secrets

If the first female playwright of the Western world lived 500 years before Shakespeare, then why has no one heard of her?

Sr. Hrosvitha, the historian for her 10th century convent at Gandersheim, feels compelled to write more than just research on the Ottonian family, and she is visited by Muse who helps Hrosvitha realize her creative dreams; however, Hrosvitha must write her poetry and plays as a “side hustle”--in secret at night and in her “off-time” from convent duties. When Abbess Gerberga discovers that Sr. Hrosvitha has been conducting “closet dramas” with Sr. Clarice’s students, Abbess insists on seeing a “performance.” But the discovery of Hrosvitha’s clandestine writing activities and shows of “ambition” threaten to get her punished when Abbess calls in the Bishop.
