2020 was a year to test us all. With libraries and archives closing their doors to protect patrons and staff due to the pandemic, librarians and archivists have worked to redefine how they serve their patrons. For the longest time, libraries have been the neighborhood's living room, where people can meet and share ideas, find comfort in stories, learn new hobbies, research, provide resources to parents, help others gain employment, and so much more. Archives have provided access to historic photos, documents, and other materials to researchers of all ages and disciplines. But what happens when libraries and archives need to close their doors? How do they continue to provide access to materials? Answer questions? Support families or researchers? Cultivate a sense of community? And most importantly, how do they do this safely?
Librarians and archivists everywhere have met these challenges with creativity, flexibility, and resilience. Whether it's through curbside pick-up, online reference, or virtual storytimes, they have still managed to foster refuges for their communities. We see now, more than ever, the services librarians and archivists provide are to the well-being of their patrons. Not only have they distributed timely medical information to frontline workers, but they have provided solace, support, stories, and art. They have proven to be a respite during these tumultuous times.
The Alaska Library Association has continued to provide learning resources, collaboration opportunities, and advocacy for Alaskan librarians and archivists. Your donations today will allow us to continue to provide support, resources, and tools so they can continue to work their magic.
Thank you for supporting us, and thank you for supporting Alaskan librarians and archivists.
Proceeds from the silent auction will go to the AkLA General Fund to help us fulfill our mission: Bringing the Alaska library community together through learning, advocacy, and collaborative action.
Delivery
Curbside Pick-up: Free!
If you are in the Anchorage area and would like to pick up your winning item you may do so at the UAA/APU Consortium Library. Parking is free (and open) during the Spring 2021 semester. Additionally, as most courses are virtual at this time, there is ample parking.
Shipping: Cost Varies
If you would like your item to be shipped to you, we do require you to pay for shipping. It varies per item and will be shipped via USPS. If you would like an estimate, use the USPS Domestic Shipping Calculation Tool. Shipping costs will be calculated after the auction is closed, and please note the Calculation Tool is an estimate, not a guaranteed price.
Fees
BetterUnite applies a fee* to each transaction that helps pay for their service. If you are able to pay those feeds at checkout, more of your contribution will go toward serving Alaskan communities.
*All online payment transactions via Credit Card or ACH are subject to processing fees that are required by the credit card companies. These fees vary depending on the payment method (bank vs. VISA vs. AMEX, etc), and are typically 2.9% + $0.30 (for credit cards) and 1%+$0.10 (for ACH). There is an additional 2% platform fee per transaction.
